Helping Sierra Leone Children

Medecins Sans Frontieres is the premier humanitarian organization in the world and has worked in Sierra Leone since 1986. More than any other organization, MSF understands the sad reality of health care in poor countries.

Health care in West Africa has always been a challenge. The meagre national health care resources were devastated by the 2014 Ebola epidemic. The decision by MSF to build a new Maternal and Child Hospital in Kenema, the epicentre of the epidemic makes perfect sense.

Care at the hospital will be free. Kenema is the third largest city in Sierra Leone with a catchment population of about a 750,000, about 40% of which are children. The new hospital opened on March 6, 2019. I'm sure the hospital will be busy.

I will join the MSF team in Kenema later this month. My role as a paediatrician will involve patient care and teaching. I will teach paediatric care to a new cadre of health care workers.
